This report, no. 8 of the Auburn Studies, published in July 2001, is based on a survey of students who entered master’s-level programs in North American theological and rabbinical schools in the fall of 1998. “In the report that follows, information about students’ backgrounds and vocational decisions is provided first. Then the vexing questions of quality are addressed: Are theological students good enough to meet future needs for religious leadership? How can theological schools and the religious bodies they serve recruit the most promising candidates for their ministries?
