Social Concern and Theological Education: A Philippines’ Perspective.

Author: Lydia Mapile
Date: August 1st, 2012
Key Words: Social concern, tasks of the church, mission of the church, contextual relevance, theological education.

As part of their formative purpose and alongside their academic processes, seminaries should provide a venue for spiritual enrichment which gives their students contextual relevancy and equip them for their various ministries. This includes bearing in mind that just as Jesus met all facets of people’s need, so a similar desire should be inculcated in those serving in the name of Christ today – including seminary students. Christian educator Robert Pazmiño has described five tasks of the Church: advocacy, community (fellowship), evangelism, service, and worship. This article describes these tasks and suggests ways in which these tasks may reflect God’s love through acts of love and compassion, especially as part of the seminary educational opportunities.
