This paper chronicles the dis-satisfaction with institutional theological education which arose especially from the 1970s onwards and examines the arguments used. It discusses alternative delivery systems, especially TEE and debates its value vis a vis more traditional methods. It uses the author’s experience in Africa and comes to clear and useful; conclusions. This essay was written for the centre for theological education, Belfast, in 2006.
